Do’s and don’ts of great business cards ~ ~
- Do include your branding – Work with colors you use for your business and include your logo or image that represents your business. This should be the same colors and look that you use for all of your print materials, web presence, social media and selling sites. Branding helps identify you as a business and makes it easy for a customer to identify you and your products.
- Don’t make it too busy – Stick to the essentials; name, company name, contact details (phone, website, and email are sufficient these days). Trying to cram too much information onto a small space makes your card busy and hard to read.
- Don’t use cutesy or flowy fonts – Like some people’s cursive writing, some fonts make information hard to read. Hard to read cards aren’t accomplishing anything. Stick to a normal readable font such as Arial or Calibri or Verdana.
- Do get them professionally printed – You can print them at home on your inkjet printer using card stock designed for business cards. Cards printed in this manner do not make the best impression. Consider one of the online printing services or your local office supply store. You can generally get a good amount of them printed for the same amount as you would invest in the card stock and ink for your printer.
- Do use them freely – Business cards are an inexpensive form of advertising and a powerful networking tool. I include a card with every sale online or at a show. If I know the item is a gift, I give the purchaser two so one can be included with the gift. Be sure to have cards handy with you at all times. You never know when you will run into a networking opportunity.
